Ellen Degeneres String Art

INTRODUCTION TO THE PROJECT

This project was done as an independent project based off of a trend that I had seen on Pinterest and other photo based social media platforms: string art. I was very interested in this trend and wanted to replicate it myself to try out new ways to create art. For the project I ended up doing a pop art style string artwork of comedian and talk show host, Ellen Degeneres, on an A2 wooden canvas.

RESEARCH

Research

As I hadn't done a project like this before with working with string, I had to do research into it to find out what materials I needed and the best way to get started with the project. I had previously seen this trend on Pinterest which is where I got the idea from so I had a rough idea of inspiration from what others had done with string art and how I might go about doing my own. However, I still continued to look into more string art projects by others online and watch YouTube videos to try and figure out exactly how to get started so that I didn't get off on the wrong foot straight away from being underprepared.

Progress of Project

PROGRESS OF PROJECT

I had underestimated how long and time consuming this project would be, thinking it would be simple and easy to do and probably take a day or two to complete. I was very wrong. It was a slow and, at times, frustrating process to complete this project filled with a lot of string spontaneously untangling itself and accidentally hitting my thumb when hammering the nails into the board. It ended up taking about a week to complete the string art as I learnt it was better for my neighbours and family to only work on the project during the day and not at night when people were trying to sleep. Although I am happy with the way that the project turned out, I think this trend/technique is one that I would do very rarely as my fingers definitely took a beating from the string and hammering!
